POEMS FOR JANUARY AND FEBRUARY

                         Alfred Noyes (1880-1958)                                    The Highwayman
                                        PART ONE
                                                 I
    THE wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty trees,
    The moon was a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
    The road was a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
    And the highwayman came riding—
                      Riding—riding—
    The highwayman came riding, up to the old inn-door.
                                                 II
    He'd a French cocked-hat on his forehead, a bunch of lace at his chin,
    A coat of the claret velvet, and breeches of brown doe-skin;
    They fitted with never a wrinkle: his boots were up to the thigh!
    And he rode with a jewelled twinkle,
                      His pistol butts a-twinkle,
    His rapier hilt a-twinkle, under the jewelled sky.
                                                 III
    Over the cobbles he clattered and clashed in the dark inn-yard,
    And he tapped with his whip on the shutters, but all was locked and barred;
    He whistled a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
    But the landlord's black-eyed daughter,
                      Bess, the landlord's daughter,
    Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.
                                                 IV
    And dark in the dark old inn-yard a stable-wicket creaked
    Where Tim the ostler listened; his face was white and peaked;
    His eyes were hollows of madness, his hair like mouldy hay,
    But he loved the landlord's daughter,
                      The landlord's red-lipped daughter,
    Dumb as a dog he listened, and he heard the robber say—
                                                 V
    "One kiss, my bonny sweetheart, I'm after a prize to-night,
    But I shall be back with the yellow gold before the morning light;
    Yet, if they press me sharply, and harry me through the day,
    Then look for me by moonlight,
                      Watch for me by moonlight,
    I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way."
                                                 VI
    He rose upright in the stirrups; he scarce could reach her hand,
    But she loosened her hair i' the casement! His face burnt like a brand
    As the black cascade of perfume came tumbling over his breast;
    And he kissed its waves in the moonlight,
                      (Oh, sweet, black waves in the moonlight!)
    Then he tugged at his rein in the moonliglt, and galloped away to the West.

                                        PART TWO
                                                 I
    He did not come in the dawning; he did not come at noon;
    And out o' the tawny sunset, before the rise o' the moon,
    When the road was a gypsy's ribbon, looping the purple moor,
    A red-coat troop came marching—
                      Marching—marching—
    King George's men came matching, up to the old inn-door.
                                                 II
    They said no word to the landlord, they drank his ale instead,
    But they gagged his daughter and bound her to the foot of her narrow bed;
    Two of them knelt at her casement, with muskets at their side!
    There was death at every window;
                      And hell at one dark window;
    For Bess could see, through her casement, the road that he would ride.
                                                 III
    They had tied her up to attention, with many a sniggering jest;
    They had bound a musket beside her, with the barrel beneath her breast!
    "Now, keep good watch!" and they kissed her.
                      She heard the dead man say—
    Look for me by moonlight;
                      Watch for me by moonlight;
    I'll come to thee by moonlight, though hell should bar the way!
                                                 IV
    She twisted her hands behind her; but all the knots held good!
    She writhed her hands till her fingers were wet with sweat or blood!
    They stretched and strained in the darkness, and the hours crawled by like years,
    Till, now, on the stroke of midnight,
                      Cold, on the stroke of midnight,
    The tip of one finger touched it! The trigger at least was hers!
                                                 V
    The tip of one finger touched it; she strove no more for the rest!
    Up, she stood up to attention, with the barrel beneath her breast,
    She would not risk their hearing; she would not strive again;
    For the road lay bare in the moonlight;
                      Blank and bare in the moonlight;
    And the blood of her veins in the moonlight throbbed to her love's refrain .
                                                 VI
        Tlot-tlot; tlot-tlot! Had they heard it? The horse-hoofs ringing clear;
    Tlot-tlot, tlot-tlot, in the distance? Were they deaf that they did not hear?
    Down the ribbon of moonlight, over the brow of the hill,
    The highwayman came riding,
                      Riding, riding!
    The red-coats looked to their priming! She stood up, straight and still!
                                                 VII
    Tlot-tlot, in the frosty silence! Tlot-tlot, in the echoing night!
    Nearer he came and nearer! Her face was like a light!
    Her eyes grew wide for a moment; she drew one last deep breath,
    Then her finger moved in the moonlight,
                      Her musket shattered the moonlight,
    Shattered her breast in the moonlight and warned him—with her death.
                                                 VIII
    He turned; he spurred to the West; he did not know who stood
    Bowed, with her head o'er the musket, drenched with her own red blood!
    Not till the dawn he heard it, his face grew grey to hear
    How Bess, the landlord's daughter,
                      The landlord's black-eyed daughter,
    Had watched for her love in the moonlight, and died in the darkness there.
                                                 IX
    Back, he spurred like a madman, shrieking a curse to the sky,
    With the white road smoking behind him and his rapier brandished high!
    Blood-red were his spurs i' the golden noon; wine-red was his velvet coat,
    When they shot him down on the highway,
                      Down like a dog on the highway,
    And he lay in his blood on the highway, with the bunch of lace at his throat.
                  *           *           *           *           *           *
                                                 X
    And still of a winter's night, they say, when the wind is in the trees,
    When the moon is a ghostly galleon tossed upon cloudy seas,
    When the road is a ribbon of moonlight over the purple moor,
    A highwayman comes riding—
                      Riding—riding—
    A highwayman comes riding, up to the old inn-door.

                                                 XI
    Over the cobbles he clatters and clangs in the dark inn-yard;
    He taps with his whip on the shutters, but all is locked and barred;
    He whistles a tune to the window, and who should be waiting there
    But the landlord's black-eyed daughter,
                      Bess, the landlord's daughter,
    Plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair.

I love this poem so much, it's really more of a story. You hardly hear of cross-overs anymore. It's usually just all "Pretty trees, pretty leaves and pretty women who sip their teas." I came up with that on the spot, can you tell? Anyway beautiful poem and the poem for January

JABBERWOCKY

Lewis Carroll

(from Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, 1872)
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
  Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
  And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
  The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
  The frumious Bandersnatch!"
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
  Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
  And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
  The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
  And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
  The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
  He went galumphing back.
"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
  Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
  He chortled in his joy.
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
  Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
  And the mome raths outgrabe.

Another beautiful poem. And lewis carrol has always been just genius. His two works of Alice in wonderland were brillant (even though all the herione did was mope about) and this is the poem for February!

Buh-Bi!(?)

I'm sorry I could post yesterday, busy typing on other things. Sorry. But, yeah. If you read my title, you see it reads "Buh-Bi!(?)" Bi as in Bi-sexual. (I think I'm writing bi right...) anyway. My friend (not close) has a PE locker next to me. I really only talk to her in PE. We bonded over hockey (We're the only ones that ever play!! Who braids their hair while being goalie???) We talk a lot. Last week, we booty bumped (a sign of friend ship in Meg talk). Yesterday, she told me she was bi-sexual. She just broke up with her girlfriend...

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

HOW THE FREAK AM I SUPPOSED TO RESPOND??? I mean...its okay and all, but when we are naked right next to one another every day, I need to know this!!! *sigh*

Anyway, the boy I work with in library, I had a little crush on. HAD. Sorry, I know I didn't tell you. Well, what if he likes me? We talk a lot, yeah. About boss nerd stuff. Like Marvel, Harry Potter, Spielberg, and today GONE WITH THE WIND(?!!!!!!) AND STAR WARS (He's perfect...and jewish. lol) (I'm baptist by the way  :P) So, apparently he knows everything about me...yeah...creepy. I think he may like me...awwww. I don't want a relationship though! And if he asks, I don't think I'll have the will-power to say no.

Meg and me "And she's PREGGERS"

Mom" Your drawing is really packing if you catch my drift" Me" Mom thats a girl!"

Jordanbleu to alex "OMG your a lesbo with junk" Me" Dude thats a guy your describing"

Awesome day

Hey people. Crystal is having an amazing what, 2 weeks? I have been flirting with an amazing guy since 2 weeks ago but he is dating my BFF. I shall call her 'the perve'. She's not a perve or anything she just says pervy things so ya. And 'the cuttie' as I will call him is dating her. It's awesome cuz he says he likes me, but it bad cuz he refuses to break up with her! Yesterday he said he wants to be my 1st kiss and I almost screamed. He still wouldnt break up with the perve though. It's really irritating. I mean, if he likes me that much, why does he still go out with her! Ugh, my loyal fans, tell me what to do.

Meg's Spanish Speaking Sparkly Day HOLA!

Quotes of the WEEK first.

From Monday:"They are friends in a chocolate tub." by my Mom

"Where are we going? TO THE BEACH!!!!" me and crys. Say it like a demon at the end.

"I SUCK IT ALL THE TIME!!!"Me. and it was totally involving paper cuts and nothing else.

My day was pretty boring. We had a "Why take Spanish?" presentation at the end of the day, so I missed choir. So, Crystal and I are screaming "Where are we going? TO THE BEACH!!" The whole freakin time and making fun of Dora. Stupid Mexican. (SOOOOOOO NOT DISCRIMINATORY!)

Well, Meg is tired and is no where near done with my Friday Fant so it will probably not have it posted today.

sorry

Buh-bye!

Meg is protesting(rather angrilly) Andrew Lloyd Webber and all her guy friends

Okay, regardless of what anyone says, I am not a prostitute. I got like, 27 offers yesterday. They went up to like 20,000, I think? My guy friends are sooo stupid. Demy got some offers too. SOOOO NOT GONNA HAPPEN!

Elmo's ex girlfriend got impregnated by his cousin. Just wanted to let you know, cousin, dude, you're freakin screwed.

I looooovvvvveeee singing scat music! Okay, we have two songs we are doing in Jazz Choir-both scat- and I loooooooovvvvvveeee them! You ever hear of the song Africa? Around in the-80's?90's? Whatever. Like, the entire things scat. We are also singing 'The Way You Look Tonight' I don't know who originally sang it, but Chris Allen sang it on American Idol-so there's that-.

Well, my choir teacher-a couple years back-formed this thing for kids to do. She named it SCAT. It's an anagram for something but I can't remember (It only happened, like, 20 minutes ago.How am I supposed to remember???). Well, her mother won the SCAT award for best parent volunteer, so her (spawn) child (from hell) says to this "Grandma won the poop award?" so 20 SCAT jokes later, we were crying so hard we were laughing. How many times can a group say 'scat' and start to get bored? Never. Such a fun word. Never gonna be able to sing Scat again without crying.

I got told by like, 20 chicks in Jazz that I should be a Jazz singer (In Jazz Choir, we mainly sing Pop Music-not very aptly named, is it?) I was all "OOOOOOKKKKKKAAAAAAAAYYYYYY?" Sorry, I don't like singing Jazz or Pop. It's not proper singing. It all comes out your mask. Bleh.

OMG!! I read my first manga and I lurrrrvvvvveeeedd it! It's called 'Angel's Coffin'. It was amazing and I suggest you read it.

Little Giry is about to fail her Honors class. WAHHHHH. I got a D on the test! It's cuz there was only 8 questions!!!! Helllloooo????

Ugh

-Giry out!
